Did you know that the name Algarve has an Arabic origin and comes from the word “Al‑Gharb”, meaning “The West”? This is because, during the Muslim presence in the region, the Algarve was considered the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula and of Continental Europe in relation to the center of the Islamic world at the time, which was the Middle East.
In addition, the Algarve was a strategic area for the Moors thanks to its privileged location in the south of Portugal, with access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as its abundance of natural resources such as fishing and agriculture.
Over time, the name Algarve became widely used and eventually became the official name of the region, which is now known for its stunning beaches, pleasant climate, and rich cultural heritage.
